atlas and tried to work out where would be the perfect
place for me to live, in terms of agreeable surroundings and
closeness to other places worth visiting.

I decided northern Italy towards the Alps, as you describe.
It just seemed to have everything.
In particular I thought the Friuli-Venezia region, which is quite
large and borders on Austria and Slovenia.

From my base there, I figured, I would be able to
get to Croatia, Austria, the Dolomites, Switzerland, Slovenia,
Bavaria and Venice, eg, in just a couple of hours.

I thoroughly approve of doing all this in your company.

In fact . . .

Affordable lodgings for us here. Seems doable?
